Free Burnout Test — Are You Burned Out?

Burnout is one of the most misunderstood conditions in modern work life. Millions of people feel chronically drained, disconnected, and ineffective — but aren't sure if what they're experiencing is "real" burnout or just stress. This free burnout test helps you find out in under 5 minutes.

What Is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. In 2019, the World Health Organisation officially classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon in ICD-11, recognising its serious impact on health and work performance.

Unlike everyday stress — which feels like too much pressure — burnout feels like nothing left. The emotional tank is empty. Motivation vanishes. Tasks that once felt meaningful feel hollow.

Psychologists Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter identified three core dimensions of burnout:

Signs You Should Take This Burnout Test

Take this assessment if you recognise any of the following burnout symptoms:

If three or more of these resonate, this burnout quiz will give you a clearer picture of where you stand.

How This Burnout Test Works

Our evidence-based burnout test measures five key domains based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory framework and validated wellbeing research:

  1. Energy & physical vitality — how depleted you feel day-to-day
  2. Emotional reserves — your capacity to connect with and care about people around you
  3. Sense of meaning — whether your work feels worthwhile
  4. Detachment & cynicism — distance you've created from your role
  5. Perceived effectiveness — confidence in your ability to do your job well

The test takes 4–6 minutes and produces a score across three burnout risk levels: Low, Moderate, or High.

Understanding Your Burnout Score

Low burnout risk (0–40%): You're managing well. Some stress is present but you're maintaining balance. Focus on prevention — rest, boundaries, and social connection.

Moderate burnout risk (41–70%): Warning signals are present. You're not in crisis but you're heading in a concerning direction. Proactive recovery steps are needed now, before symptoms intensify.

High burnout risk (71–100%): You're showing significant burnout symptoms across multiple domains. Rest alone is rarely enough at this stage. Peer support, professional guidance, and structural changes (workload, boundaries, purpose alignment) are important next steps.

What To Do After Taking This Burnout Test

Your burnout score is a starting point, not a verdict. Here's what the research says actually helps:

Burnout Test for Students

Academic burnout follows the same three dimensions as occupational burnout but is driven by academic pressure, perfectionism, and the absence of meaningful recovery time. Students experiencing burnout often score high on exhaustion and cynicism toward their studies. Our burnout assessment captures both occupational and academic burnout patterns.
